In recognition of individuals and establishments contributing to the growth of the Muslim-friendly travel sector, Aquila Private Game Reserve has recently been honoured with the esteemed Halal In Travel award for Muslim-Friendly Game Reserve & National Park of the Year.
The award was presented to the renowned Big Five safari lodge during the CrescentRating Global Summit, which was hosted in Singapore this year.

The event, attended by distinguished guests including Ambassadors of Spain and Turkey, as well as tourism and other ministers from across the globe, recognised Aquila’s outstanding commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all guests of diverse cultures and various faiths.
In its entirety, the CrescentRating Global Summit is a celebration of travel industry players’ efforts to make halaal travel a seamless experience through the recognition of destinations, organisations and individuals that have made a considerable impact on the Muslim lifestyle travel sector across an array of categories.
Owner of Aquila Private Game Reserve, Searl Derman, expressed his gratitude at receiving the accolade and emphasised that the award spoke volumes about the reserve during ‘a time where the world needs more love, understanding, and respect for one another’.
The iconic reserve has long been recognised for its efforts in social upliftment, job creation, conservation and sustainable tourism.
During his acceptance speech, group marketing and trade manager of Aquila Collection, Johan van Schalkwyk, said the Halal In Travel award went beyond the physical attributes of the reserve, such as the on-site prayer room and the services and facilities offered.
Van Schalkwyk highlighted that the recognition was a testament to the staff’s dedication to ensuring guests have freedom of expression while indulging in an unforgettable wildlife experience in Cape Town.
‘With its picturesque location near Cape Town and its commitment to inclusivity and diversity, Aquila continues to attract visitors from all walks of life,’ said van Schalkwyk.
‘Guests can enjoy a truly immersive Big Five safari experience while appreciating the abundant wildlife and breathtaking landscapes,’ he added.
This is neither the first nor the last of the safari lodge’s list of accolades, ranging from the respected Lilizela and Imvelo awards to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Warrior award, the Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award and many more.
