The V&A Waterfront is calling all beer lovers to Makers Landing for a Dockside Beer Experience on Saturday, 4 June from 12pm to 9pm.
Curated by Ukhamba Beerworx in partnership with Makers Landing, the Dockside Beer Experience introduces local microbrewers to a mainstream market in the heart of the city at V&A Waterfront’s Food Destination Makers Landing right next to the Cruise Terminal.
The experience is a celebration of the quality, innovation and variety of local craft beer with tastings from Cape Town’s local microbreweries, great food, live music and games.
Participating local microbrewers span the entire peninsula, from Woodstock, Salt River and Ndabeni to Kenilworth and Kommetjie – the Dockside Beer Experience includes Ukhamba Beerworx, Woodstock Brewery, Shackleton Brewing Co, AfroCarribean (Banana Jam Brewing Co), Hoghouse and Lakeside Brewing Company.
Microbrewer Lethu Tshabangu from Ukhamba Beerworks at Makers Landing says: “Brewers are all united by their passion for beer. For us the Dockside Beer Experience is an opportunity for us all to tell our personal liquid stories. We are not competitors, we’re a team that works together to promote the love of well-crafted beer, good food and good music. They all go together. Although we all follow the same brewing process, we each bring our own personal touch to our beers and visitors to the Dockside Beer Experience will taste the personal variations. We come from all over the city but believe that Makers Landing is the perfect place for us to showcase what we do and love. The space and the décor are perfect for the event, and who wouldn’t enjoy a good beer while watching the ocean and the boats in the harbour?”
AfroCarribean Brewing Company
This local microbrewery attached to Banana Jam Cafe brews unique ales with an African/Caribbean flavour. What started over a few pints and a home-brew system grew into a 100% independent brewery that has 10 different indie ales on tap at Banana Jam Cafe. They are growing, innovating and just having loads of craft beer fun.
Shackleton Brewing Company
Shackleton Brewing Company stems from Head Brewer Steve’s adventures to Antarctica whilst researching climate change and oceanography. He spent three months exploring the open ocean of the South Atlantic as well as traversing the Antarctic continent. During his time there he read about the great Sir Ernest Shackleton who, during the early 1900s, began a voyage to cross the Antarctic continent. The compelling story of exploration, innovation, leadership, adventure, survival and an implacable drive for success resonated as qualities that Steve deemed valuable for the brewery.
Their craft brewery is nestled in a beautiful location in Salt River, Cape Town where all their products are produced on-site, using a Brewhouse imported from the UK.
They strive to produce industry-leading craft beers and vodka iced teas and contribute positively to their local community.
Woodstock Brewery
In the heart of Woodstock, you will find one of the best craft breweries in the country. Situated on Albert Road in Woodstock, Woodstock Brewery has grown from strength to strength in the past few years. With the talents of Head brewer Etienne Louw, Woodstock Brewery now produces and distributes 10 different brews, including Seasonals and speciality brews.
The journey for Woodstock Brewery began in Korea when Andre Viljoen decided that he wanted to try out something entrepreneurial and move back to the Mother City. The decision to go with a brewery was inspired by the fact that it was a perfect combination of art, business and science. In addition, there was a big gap in the craft beer market in South Africa. Andre bought the building off of the internet using Google Street View in a neighbourhood which was, at the time, the burgeoning foodie centre of Cape Town. The building was a mass of concrete, perfect for a brewery, which would otherwise have ended up as a landfill.
Today, the brewery is stocked in various outlets throughout South Africa as well as a selection of markets in Cape Town and surrounds. The brewers are always playing around with new flavours and techniques, constantly creating new and exciting brews.
Ukhamba Beerworx
Ukhamba Beerworx is a local brewery that brings modern brewing techniques and marries them with traditional African ingredients and recipes to bring a truly unique African beer. They strive to deliver a taste that’s exciting yet familiar and are proud to source 100% African ingredients for a flavour that robustly yet perfectly balances bitter and sweet.
Founded on the footsteps of their forefathers to embrace African history and to preserve the true taste of African Beer, Ukhamba Beerworx is from ukhamba uniting people for decades and its how they named the brewery. It is from this name that they continue the legacy.
So every time you are enjoying an Ukhamba beer with friends and strangers, you are celebrating the traditional legacy and heritage of African people.
These are just a few of the amazingly unique craft beers you’ll get to enjoy at the Dockside Beer Experience. Organise your designated driver, or order an Uber, but make sure to head to Makers Landing this Saturday to support – and drink – locally.
