During tough times, South Africans have proven themselves resilient, always ready to have a laugh and show compassion.

One man trying to make ends meet has become quite the local celebrity with his witty and funny cardboard signs. Lusindiso Malgas (27) has lost his job due to COVID-19 like so many others. He has been forced to ask generous community members for spare change while job hunting in between.

“I had a few jobs, construction site, Pick n Pay picker and packer, and some others but with lockdown they cut my hours and then I lose my job,” Malgas told Cape Town Etc.

But he will not go down without a fight. Malgas puts a smile on the faces driving by, with signs saying “Too allergic to water, need beer,” or “Supermodel out of work,” captioning the picture on Instagram saying “The road is my runway”.

“The funny signs come from far back when I was in school. I used to write funny notes on the blackboard and the whole class and teacher would laugh,” Malgas says. “Now, I just want to make people smile with my signs.”

Malgas says his dream is to own a t-shirt printing business where he can print his quirky sayings on shirts. “Or maybe learn how to operate a crane and go back in construction site,” he added.

Take a look at some of his best work so far:
