Skeleton Gorge, the hiking trail that takes you through forests up the Eastern Slopes of Table Mountain and its surrounds has ironically seen a few broken bones recently. However, the Wilderness Search and Rescue Western Cape (WSAR) were hot on the rescue missions.
One trailblazer, a 47-year-old gentleman, sustained a broken ankle and was quickly rescued by The Western Cape Department of Health AMS helicopter, whereby a rescue climber and medic were deployed to the scene in the difficult conditions.
The hiker was then treated and carried away to an easily accessible location before being hoisted up, up and away into the aircraft. He later went to the hospital.
Another case saw a patient sustain a broken leg in Skeleton Gorge. WSAR and Skymed conducted the extraction brilliantly.
The WSAR says if you’re venturing into the mountains, make sure you know who to call in an emergency – 021 937 0300.
