#HighburyHearsYou – we at Cape Town Etc are passionate about getting local restaurants back and booming in business. As part of our #HighburyHearsYou initiative, we’re dishing out the deets on some incredible restaurants in and around town.

The Athletic Club & Social opened its doors on December 14, 2018. Since then, it has grown to become a firm local favourite. It’s one of Cape Town’s cosiest corner restaurants to eat, drink and get social.

The venue itself boasts three stories, with each floor having its own unique look. Very classic, old school vibes echo throughout. Absolutely splendid, we do say. The front of the building and its balcony features a spectacular, widespread view of Signal Hill.

What on earth does athletics have to do with anything? The building itself dates back to 1900 when it was owned by pharmacist and sports fanatic, Herbert Tothill. The old chap converted the building into a social spot for sports stars to gather over a drink or two.

Part museum, part restaurant – vintage sports equipment and memorabilia is scattered throughout the venue, giving The Athletic Club & Social a truly authentic atmosphere.

Adding to the vintage vibes are frequent performances by live musicians. Nothing like the perfect background music to set the scene.

Now for the food. You’re in for a treat! The restaurant and the bar offers a menu combining Greek, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavours. Vegan and vegetarian guests are substantially catered for as well. The eatery hosts meat-free Mondays, which promises 50% of all veggie dishes.

A coal-fired rotisserie is also a popular feature, firing up divine lamb and chicken dishes, best accompanied with steaming, fresh pita bread.

Portions are hearty, ensuring no guests go home hungry. And let’s not forget about the world-class cocktails that are best enjoyed on the top floor, overlooking city lights.

Check out the full menu here. We challenge you not to drool…

A three-course dinner and glass of wine special is currently running for R250 at The Athletic Club & Social. The offer is available Monday to Wednesday, until the end of March. Book now to avoid disappointment.
