The Cape Town leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series was labelled the ‘Best Live Experience for 2018’ at this year’s Sports Industry Awards, held in Johannesburg on Friday.

This is the second year in a row that the tournament received this award, which stands testament to how popular the event is – attracting both local, national and international spectators.

Tickets sold out within minutes in 2017 and over 110 000 spectators attended the event to watch teams go head to head in the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series.

The Sports Industry Awards recognises excellence and achievements across the spectrum of South African sports, from digital innovation to entertainment.

SA Rugby was also awarded for the Best PR for 2018, with their video clip from the 2017 campaign to welcome back the Springbok team from the HSBC World Rugby Seven Series – after they were crowned champions in 2016 and 2017. The video is a friendly and playful reminder to welcome the boys home after their victory win and echos the heart of South African rugga sportsmanship.

Other sport organisations that scooped awards, proving that local sports are moving up in their innovation and development, was the Sharks Facebook page for ‘Digital Platform of the Year’. The Sanlam Cape Town marathon was crowned the Participation Event of the year, showcasing the sporting industry talent of the Cape.
