Cape Town has recently added another accolade to Her treasure chest after being announced as one of the world’s best cities for mental well-being for expats.
Many locals, semigrants and travellers can undoubtedly attest to the positive influence our city has on our inner hubs – our minds.
A study by the group ‘Expatriate’ set to task with discovering the world’s best places for expats to live based on mental wellbeing research, and Cape Town made the tier of the 20 cities chosen.
The study looked at the top 40 best countries for expats and scored them based on eight different ‘mental wellbeing markers’ including:
- sunshine hours per year
- fitness facilities
- quality sleep
- the amount of ‘green space’
- work-life balance
- happiness
- friendliness to expats
- healthcare
Scores from each category were added to give an overall ranking for the top 20. Cape Town swooped in at number 16 overall taking all the above factors into consideration. Our sunshine factor was a particular ray of light in taking us to the top 20, where under this category we ranked at number 7 in the world.
Cape Town wasn’t the only South African city to make the list – with Johannesburg following closely behind at number 19.
As many make moves to different cities with the ease-up of the pandemic, Cape Town is set to be a hot pick. This is largely due to the one gift the pandemic gave many – the opportunity to work remotely. As the ‘Great Resignation’ continues to sweep through the world, people are placing more emphasis on the option to work from home, largely with the argument that excuses to come into an office just aren’t cutting it anymore. And if you’re going to be working remotely, why wouldn’t you want to live in a space brimming with land and seascapes, lifestyle dreams and activities to keep your bucket-list bottomless – if you can afford it.
