The climate crisis is encouraging more travellers to think of ways to move around and enjoy sustainable travel in a breathtaking location. And Cape Town boasts an array of hotels with sustainability at its core.
In 2020, Cape Town was named one of the world’s most eco-friendly travel destinations in a Tourlane survey and continues to receive praise.
In a recent study undertaken by energy experts at Uswitch, the stunning coastal town secured a spot on the list of ‘cities with the most sustainable hotels’.
Using Booking.com’s ‘sustainable’ filter, the team calculated how many hotels in over 200 of the world’s biggest cities were classed as a more environmentally friendly option.
This was then compared with the total number of hotels on offer in each place to reveal which holiday locations have the highest percentage of sustainable stays.
Cape Town grabbed the 17th spot on the list with 289 hotels that have been awarded the sustainable badge on Booking.com out of 1757. Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg featured on the list as well – a big win for South Africa.
The analysis revealed Vancouver in Canada is the city with the highest percentage of sustainable stays, with nearly 44% of all hotels being recognised for their sustainability efforts.
Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm, took the second place with over 40% of its 216 hotels credited for their sustainability efforts while Toronto, Canada came in at third, where nearly 25% of all the hotels listed are certified as sustainable. 37 out of the city’s 150 hotels are paying more attention to their carbon footprint.
Let’s continue to reduce our impact on the planet!
