Savannah Voigt and Zack Waters are 16-year-old lifeguards at the Clifton branch in Cape Town who are partaking in the Robben Island crossing with an aim to raise funds for the Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club.
According to Back A Buddy, Savannah is a Grade 11 student who currently trains at the Sports Science Institute of SA with her squad SSISA Swimming, while Zack is a Grade 10 student who trains at SwimLab in Wynberg.
This is a challenging task for both swimmers who have to tackle a distance of roughly 7.5km along with the difficulties of currents, tides, and water temperatures.
The Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club’s seniors and pro lifeguards lost their out of season jobs and have been unable to work since May, due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The funds raised will go towards the CSLC Bursary Fund, which will be used to help and support individuals participating in the SA Lifesaving Championships.
The big event is set to take place between August 20 – 22. The Atlantic Oceans foresees temperatures of 10 – 16 degrees and for safety reasons, the best day to swim will be selected closer to the time. The crossing will be coordinated and assisted by Derrick Fraser of Big Bay Events.
