The Mother City is a tourist hotspot with a number of locations across the city frequently visited for their reputation, but in spite of this there are still a number of “secret spots” that are lesser-known by visitors and closely guarded by locals.
So if you’ve just moved to Cape Town or somehow got left out of the loop here are a few locations locals love to visit that tourist have not caught onto yet.
1. Camps Bay Tidal Pool
Many people who have called Camps Bay home for decades have not even discovered this secret location.
Warmed by the rays of the sun this generous tidal pool is wide enough to swim laps and shallow enough to safely swim with kids and is undoubtedly the perfect place for a morning swim.
Camps Bay beach is often over loaded with people and when it is, this lesser-known tidal pool is a great plan B. It offers clean, clear water and a few schools of friendly fish too.
Located close to the Maison J coffee shop, it’s also great for a pick-me-up before heading off to work in the morning.
2. Beta Beach
When the tide is high this little beach in Bakoven disappears almost as quickly as it appeared but is nonetheless a must-visit spot.
It is seldom busy and offers a huge space to swim, sunbath and frolic in the sun, the waves in this area are calmer than most and the vibe is peaceful and quiet.
Perfect for those who enjoy leisurely activities like reading a book on the beach or simply relaxing in the sun.
The conveniently located Bootleggers also offering the perfect spot for coffee, lunch or an on-the-go smoothie so be sure to come hungry.
3. Saunder’s Rock
Many have not even heard of Saunder’s Rock at Sea Point and it is one of those places easily overlooked if you aren’t already aware of its existence.
From the roadside it is tucked away but venture a little further along the promenade than you would usually and you’re sure to stumble onto one of the Mother City’s best kept secrets.
This hidden beach and tidal pool offers one of the most fantastic sunset views and they’re the best place to be at high tide. Huge granite rocks add to the scenery and the cool waters are perfect for chilling out during the hot summer months.
Hot days are not the only time to visit, however, as the serene sitting is equally idyllic on foggy days and for evening dips with restaurants locally conveniently close by for a snack after your swim.
