There’s a Capetonian fashion designer making massive waves in the fashion world, and was crowned accordingly in its capital. These waves are so grand that they earned our local Lukhanyo Mdingi the prize of fashion’s dreams. As Mdingi himself put it: “we met the moment.”
Winning a prize that honours one of fashion’s most iconic figures, Karl Lagerfeld, is no easy feat. When you think Lagerfeld, illusive black sunglasses and snow-jealous white gloves emerge into visualization – and of course Chanel.
The LVMH’s special Karl Lagerfeld Prize (with LVMH standing for Louis Vuitton, Moët and Hennessy Group) is awarded to top young designers across the globe. It is, as glamour writes, one of the most coveted prizes across the globe to receive as a young designer.
Awarded in September, it’s usually one lucky recipient who earns fashion’s honourable kiss. However, for the first time in eight editions, three designers were awarded. And a Capetonian was one of them.

The three winners were Lukhanyo Mdingi (South Africa) Colm Dillane (United States) and Rui Zhou (China). The total prize money, which is €150 000 (R2.5 million), is to be shared by the three, and each will receive a one-year mentorship.
It’s not the first time a South African has hailed fashion greatness in the form of this award either, as The South African records.
The brilliant fashion innovator, Thebe Magugu was the first LVMH prize-winner coming from South Africa.
