What is Africa Day all about?
Africa Day, previously known as African Freedom Day and African Liberation Day has historically taken place on May 25 since 1963, as introduced by the African Union (previously the Organisation of African Unity).
In 1963, 30 leaders of the independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Adaba, Ethiopia, with aims to fight for independence movements for other African states. Africa Day celebrates not only the rich and powerful history of African states, but also our achievements and the founding of the African Union.
Africa Day celebrates the “enormous promise and potential of this diverse and dynamic continent,” says UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
“The prospects on the horizon are bright – from Africa’s growing and vibrant youth population to initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area, the Decade of Women’s Financial and Economic Inclusion, and the African Union’s bold vision for the future, Agenda 2063,” Guterres adds.
This year Africa Day has been designated as the Year of Nutrition by the African Union.
“On this year’s Africa Day, the world must join together in solidarity with all Africans to strengthen food security, and put nutrition within reach of every person,” says the UN.
