Update: 4 September
While Jamie Oliver has been spotted at various restaurants in Cape Town and bringing his social media followers along with him, Capetonians couldn’t help but ponder the reason for the trip.
While spending time in South Africa, Oliver visited well-known Cape Town culinary gems such as the V&A Waterfront’s PIER as well as Our Local on Kloof Street.
‘I’ve been blown away by the food I’ve eaten while I’ve been here; every meal has been world-class. I can honestly say I’ve had some of my favourite meals in a long time right here in Cape Town over the last 72 hours. I’m super impressed,’ said the chef, according to 2oceansvibe.
Despite his admiration for the local food, the TV personality’s visit involved a secondary motive.
Oliver has been an advocate for healthy eating and lifestyle choices for many years.
The industry mogul has now officially joined forces with Checkers in launching the brand’s partnership with Discovery Vitality’s Healthy Food benefit.
During his time in Cape Town, he filmed an advertisement in which the new partnership was announced. The advert can be viewed on Youtube.
‘Everything I do is about helping people to live happier, healthier lives through the joy of food. Knowing how to cook is a huge part, but the journey begins with your shopping basket.’
Checkers and Checkers60 is set to join Discovery Vitality as a Healthy Food Benefit retail partner as of 1 September 2024.
The benefit programme encourages healthy eating habits by rewarding members who buy specific dietician-approved healthy foods from screened retail partners.
Oliver ended an interview with News24 by confirming that his Mother City visit related to increasing the accessibility of healthy and nutritious food for people across all age groups.
