The penguins of Boulders Beach are definitely famous, with locals and tourists flocking to take photos of them everyday. However, they shot to super-stardom when the Chainsmokers recently visited them and posted an entertaining video with the marine birds to social media. Martin Garrix, an acclaimed electronic music DJ, also makes an appearance in the clip.

The Chainsmokers, a world-famous American DJ trio, came to Cape Town to perform at the annual music festival, Ultra. On their visit, they decided to head to the iconic beach and meet its inhabitants.

In a video they posted on social media, the Chainsmokers joked and said the marine birds “made” them do the “Mannequin Challenge”, a once viral social media video trend. We cannot help but notice that the starring penguins appear to be mesmerised by the DJ group.

“Look, we know the Mannequin Challenge is far over but the penguins wanted to do it so…”

The Mannequin Challenge went viral in 2016, with videos of individuals appearing to be frozen in position while the song “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd ft Gucci Mane plays in the background. The song became the theme music for the challenge.

Our local penguins were the clear winners of the challenge, staying incredibly still throughout the video.
