South Africa’s hospitality industry has suffered an immense knock as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Players within the industry have expressed their concern for their future in light of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s national address on Sunday [July 12].

President Ramaphosa announced that the ban on alcohol was reinstated with immediate effect along with a curfew of 9pm, and many players within the restaurant industry have expressed concern at the further detriment this may cause.

Chef Dave Schneider from Chefs Warehouse at Maison shared the following to his Facebook page following the President’s announcement:

“To all hospitality family members. Let’s show them the reality of the domino effect caused by these new restrictions. No alcohol, no dinner service, no guest house accommodation, load shedding… Use the hashtags #jobssavelives and #foodforthought. Let this be a start of something massive. The world doesn’t listen to mediocre… So let’s do extraordinary things moving forward!”
