Lockdown blues have left many South Africans yearning for something exciting to look forward to. These prayers were answered when the Mother City Drive-In announced in May that Capetonians would soon have a new drive-in cinema.

Capetonians were thrilled at the announcement, but the lack of detail frustrated many. Finally, the Mother City Drive-In organisers have released more information to explain how this thrilling throwback offering will work.

While there is no confirmed opening date, organisers say the Drive-In will open as soon as lockdown levels decrease and restrictions ease.

“Mother City Drive-in is working extremely hard behind the scenes and engaging with relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure all safety measures and protocols are strictly adhered to. Although we do not have exact dates for our launch, we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to confirm a date as soon as we can,” they wrote on Facebook.

The Drive-In is designed to be mobile, and will operate at chosen locations for limited periods at a time before moving to a new area. The locations will be announced in time.

Limited pre-order tickets and vouchers are already available via Pick n Pay and Webtickets. Tickets or vouchers purchased will be valid for the first series of drive-in shows at a destination of your choice.

The Drive-In will be a full experience beyond just movie-watching. They plan to run a series of events to assist and support local comedians, musicians and entertainers post lockdown, as the entertainment industry was hit incredibly hard by the lockdown.

“Mother City Drive-in is not focused solely on showing films, we are also offering a platform for comedians, musicians & entertainers to get back to work after an extensive lockdown period with zero income. Food, snacks and beverage will be on offer and served to you by our friendly staff, adhering to strict safety protocols.”

Here’s how much is will cost to pull up at the Drive-In:

– R249 – Small Vehicle (Hatchback, sedan or similar) including one driver and one passenger
– R349 – Large vehicle (SUV, 4×4, Mini van or similar) including one driver and two passengers
– R99 per additional passenger
