I’m sure many Capetonians will agree that this is in fact the coldest winter we have had, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Leigh-Ann Londt. The past week has been filled with rainy blues and storms, and we have been blessed with some snow around certain parts of the Mother City. As expected, many are probably planning to take a road trip this weekend to go and experience this frozen wonderland.

The question is – what snacks do you take with you on this icy journey? Can you even picnic in the snow? Of course you can and we’ve got a few tips on how to do it right.
It takes minimal supplies to set up a private picnic area and indulge in some homemade snacks in the snow. Don’t have a waterproof blanket? Pack a refuse bag or two to place under your base to prevent your blankie (and bums) from getting soaked. Just be sure to take them home again to reuse or recycle.
Here are a few foodie ideas to take along with you that are sure to keep you warm inside, and in some cases, provide the energy needed for a fun-filled day in the snow.
First things first – it’s always good to have a good breakfast at home to remain energised while driving to your snowy location. Foods with fibre and proteins like porridge, fruit yoghurt and eggs are simple to make and good choices to keep the energy flowing.
Don’t forget your coffee or hot chocolate to go in a flask! Having a pair of gloves, a scarf and a beanie on may break the frostbite feeling, but there is nothing more relieving than wrapping your hands around a hot cuppa!
But what if you are feeling peckish? Here are a few snacks to take along that are not only healthy, but will keep bellies full and bodies warm, all while providing the vitamins needed to combat the cold.
- Oranges
- Biltong
- Figs and dates
- Nuts
- Crackers, cheese and spreads
- Dried fruits like apricots and pineapple
- Energy bars
- A soul-warming homemade sarmie
Once lunchtime hits, some sandwiches with fillings of your choice and a hot beverage are all you need to get that warm and cosy feeling inside – ready to take on any snowman in sight!
Now, we know its challenging travelling with warm meals, but spices like cinnamon and chilli will give you the same sense of comfort. It’s as simple as adding a kick of hot sauce to a chicken-mayo, or sprinkling some cinnamon over peanut butter rice cakes.
Flasks aren’t only good for hot beverages, but soup too! Hot soup and freshly baked bread on the go? Now we’re talking!
Setting up a full-on braai might not be the easiest thing to do with freezing fingers and wet conditions. However, if you happen to have a small skottle, we suggest bringing it along.
Remember those homemade sarmies we were talking about? Turn them into steamy, golden toasties by throwing them into a hot pan. Melted cheese in the snow? Yes please!
