Enjoy the winter wonders of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens for less this year thanks to its free-entry-for-kids offer, along with an awesome kids’ programme.
Over the school holidays from June 15 to July 8, the annual Winter Wonder Special will kick off at Kirstenbosch Gardens, allowing children aged 17 and younger to enter for free and enjoy an exciting kids’ programme packed will fun-filled activities at the Moyo Kirstenbosch Restaurant.
Activities will include arts and crafts, drumming, slime-making, fun rides, and more.
This annual special is a great opportunity for families to experience the beauty of one of Africa’s most beautiful gardens and learn more about its meticulously cultivated local flora.
Visitors can enjoy either a free 90 minute tour or simply grab a map and explore on their own. The starting point for the tours is The Conservatory, a desert house with a majestic baobab tree at its centre.
The next stop is the Tree Canopy Walkway, also known as The Boomslang. Here kids can see an array of birds and life-size dinosaur sculptures lurking behind giant cycads in the Cycad Amphitheatre.
Further up, you’ll spot different species of flowering proteas and near Gate 2, you can view some of the healing plants in the Useful Plants Garden, smell your way through the Fragrance Garden and appreciate the beauty of African art in the Sculpture Garden.
There’s no better way to visit Kirstenbosch Gardens than to stay for the day, so be sure to either pack a picnic basket or head over to Moyo for lunch. The restaurant’s hearty winter menu has an array of delightful dishes to warm your stomach, including flambéed kudu fillet, vegan shakshouka and Moyo mousse with a twist. A special kids’ menu is also available, all to be enjoyed by one of the cosy fireplaces.
Moyo is located nearest to the Visitors’ Centre (Gate 1) at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. Kirstenbosch is open every day from 8am to 6pm in winter.
