Like most Cape Town locals, I love myself a good G&T and now GINJA Restaurant at the Victoria and Alfred Hotel has combined one of the Mother City’s favourite things – gin – with another, high tea, creating a new speciality experience for all who happen to be as passionate about gin as I am.

Visitors to this easy, breezy harbour-side restaurant, which is completed by a gorgeous view of Cape Town’s favourite mountain, now have yet another reason to grab the phone and make a booking right away.

Ginja’s GIN HiJh TeA evening with complimentary Fitch & Leeds tonic, held on the first Saturday of every month, allows you to sip and savour a wide range of gins, and if that wasn’t enough you can also look forward to delightful finger foods that look almost too good to eat.

Each occasion focuses on a different local gin label each time. Gin enthusiasts can enjoy creations from Woodstock Gin, Six Dogs Distillery, Cape Town Gin Company, Musgrave Gin, and Amari to name a few, served between 3pm and 6pm.

I would say this is one of the best ways to try a good variety of gins while enjoying some perfectly-accompanying sweet treats and savoury snacks. The experience will cost you R185 an evening, with gins charged separately.

It is worth informing gin-lovers that this experience is not as suited to vegetarians unless you happen to have a sweet tooth and can indulge in the dessert alternatives to the salmon-based savoury snacks.

The sweet offerings include mini milk tarts, dainty little carrot cakes, apple roses, and cake ‘popsicles’. The salmon canapés are, very uniquely, dessert-inspired, pretty salmon swiss rolls and even a salmon ‘cake’ adorned with a scattering of edible flowers being some of them.

For those without any dietary requirements you’re in for a sweet-and-savoury experience that will top your list.

If all of this hasn’t been enough for you to block off the next first Saturday of the month in your calendar, guests who attend the GIN HiJh TeA are also serenaded by talented local musicians and are welcome to indulge in a little coffee and actual tea (included in the price) once they’ve drank their fill of gin cocktails.

Hands down this has to be one of the best ways to beGIN every month – and you’re sure to leave with a smile once the festiviTEAs are done.

Keep an eye out for the next featured gin of the month here.
