Wine lovers have a wonderful opportunity to taste an array of the country’s best wines, including older vintages not usually available to the public, in the beautiful surroundings of Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West.
The occasion is the Cape Vintner Classification (CVC) Summer Soirée taking place on Saturday 12 February, from 16h00-19h00.
The CVC is the only association in South Africa championing sustainability, ethics, and quality of distinguished Cape wines. Member producers include some of the most prestigious wine estates, including Vergelegen, which is 322 years old this year. Vergelegen is renowned for its history, culture, architecture, sustainability and 18 spectacular gardens.
Summer soirée participants include Vergelegen, Almenkerk, Diemersdal, DeMorgenzon, Kanonkop, Morgenster, Wildekrans, De Wetshof, and Anthonij Rupert Wyne. Rare vintage wines from other members of the CVC will also be available for tasting at the CVC Vinoteque table.
The cost is R295/person, which includes a welcome glass of Vergelegen wine, tastings of both current and older wines from CVC members, and a cheese and charcuterie board.
Guests can meet renowned winemakers, enjoy live jazz and stroll in the splendid Vergelegen gardens. Summer horticultural highlights include a formal rose garden, the walled Octagonal Garden and the East Garden, which currently has 14000 agapanthus plants in bloom.
Guests can also book for dinner at Vergelegen’s bistro-style Stables Restaurant, or the River Café, a popular pop-up in a glass marquee on the banks of the Lourens River.
Strict Covid-19 regulations apply. Should the weather be unfavourable, a new date will be set.
“Our horticulture and hospitality teams have been hard at work to ensure that the estate looks its summer best,” says Vergelegen MD Wayne Coetzer. “We are delighted to host our fellow CVC members and to welcome both guests who are long-standing friends of Vergelegen, and those visiting for the first time. This is the perfect opportunity for wine enthusiasts to relish the very best that the Cape winelands offer.”
