If you’ve ever cruised the bustling streets of Voortrekker on your way to Parow over the years you may have become familiar with a rather colourful sign.
The word ‘Harlequin’ is sprawled across a large building in colourful letters while the symbol it’s named after (a harlequin) is proudly displayed outside, beckoning all those who pass this busy road to take a peek inside.
Restaurant is displayed in big, bold letters, revealing what you’re getting once you’ve parked your car and sat down.
Harlequin Restaurant is steeped in some pretty incredible history. First established in the late 60s, it’s spent nearly 57 years on Cape Town’s culinary scene with patrons near and far enjoying some of its popular Italian dishes.
But all good things must come to an end, and it’s certainly the end of an era as this Northern Suburbs institution closes its doors.
The shocking news came via the restaurant’s Facebook Page which confirmed it would be saying goodbye to patrons on 1 July.
The news has been met with a mix of sadness and nostalgia, and the restaurant has been fully booked as countless flock to say their final goodbyes.
From gnocchi bolognese to lamb stew to classic decor, Harlequin Restaurant is a trip down memory lane that serves up an unpretentious atmosphere with comfort food at its best.
Tuck into some authentic Italian food one last time. Make sure you call ahead to make a booking as tables are usually fully booked at this time.
