A pull towards the oasis of greenery in the concrete jungle led me to one of my most unique culinary experiences to date- writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
The tug of luscious flora decor, the calm breeze of nonchalance, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee all sat side by side at Our Local, Kloof Street.
I’d be lying if I said that it wasn’t the jungle aesthetic that caught my attention, but that’s exactly what led me and a friend to venture inside.
“I saw this place that looked like- those places where you buy plants, but I think people were eating there,” my friend mused as we were actually looking for parking for another breakfast spot before the adventure began.
Informing my friend that he was talking about a nursery, we decided to see if such a place existed. Coffee in a jungle? It sounded intriguing.
We followed the leafy trail to the yellow brick wall exterior of Our Local and stepped inside an experience as unique as their shakshuka dish.
Walking in, you’re immediately met with a botanist’s sense of peace. Phill Collin’s Tarzan soundtrack boomed in my mind. The energy, to speak the Capetonian’s language, was soothing from the go. I have never seen a barista whip up a coffee with such chill.
Round the back we found a hidden table in a room splashed in green. We pondered at the old books scattered, the lamp that hung out on the opposite side of the room, and the gold finishes.
“It’s so charming,” my friend mused aloud. Indeed, if an antique store dressed in greenery that also makes delicious food is a place, it’s Our Local.
I ordered the Smashed Avocado on Sourdough with their exquisite chili sauce to top. It was our sunbeam of a waiter’s recommendation. My friend mused that I should have made my own decision. I expressed that Lucas our server was well-versed in the boutique foodie’s decisions.
Lucas was right, and the simple breakfast was everything I needed. Wholesome and fresh, with a jump-kick of spice.
My friend dived into the bacon toastie topped with a divine poached egg, that left them with a tremendous smile, and me knowing what I’d be ordering the next time.
Their coffee? Excellent. However, it was the fresh orange juice that tasted how I imagine a good day on an orange farm would.
As for the service (disclaimer, they did not know they were being reviewed) I couldn’t rave more about how kind and on the ball the service. Even the bill came drenched in smiley faces and well wishes for a brilliant evening, served up in an old book in the unique style that Our Local fashions.
Lucas, you are a gem of a server. Our Local? You are a treasure of a place.
