Those lucky enough to be in the Mossel Bay area on Friday night were treated to a show of note as the night sky lit up with bright clashes of lightning.

Loud echoing sounds of thunder could be heard across the small harbour town and flashes of lightning danced across the sky. As the thunderstorm ranged,  the evening became almost as bright as the day with the overhead sparks.

What is lightning?

Lightning is an electrostatic release where two electrically charged areas in the atmosphere or on the ground momentarily equalize, causing the flashes that we see. The flash is essentially a emission of energy, up to as much as one gigajoule.

Luckily for those of us who missed the show, a few residents staying in the area managed to capture the spectacle.
