The new year brings a fresh start and endless possibilities, but for South Africans, it includes a whole lot of long weekends. While we love a good long weekend that’s dedicated to catching up on our favourite series and sleeping, sometimes heading out and breathing in fresh air can do wonders.
With 2 May being the last public holiday for a while, we’re looking to take full advantage with plenty of sleep, relaxation and these incredible events happening around Cape Town:
Say Cheese
There’s nothing like a gloriously long weekend in the Cape Winelands. Cheese and wine? Yes, please. The SA Cheese Festival is hosting all of this and more, with it’s second pop-up event taking place in Stellenbosch (Sandringham) for those looking to enjoy the creamy goodness of cheese and the smooth sip of your favourite glass of wine. Tickets are currently priced at R290 per person.

“Arr” We’re sailing the seas
If you loved watching Captain Jack Sparrow do his thing in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, then you’ll love this! Enjoy Cape Town’s skyline by sailing the seas as the V&A Waterfront’s Jolly Roger Pirate ship takes you on an adventure. Considered South Africa’s only authentic pirate ship, it’s a great attraction that offers a jolly great time for those looking for something a little more unique to enjoy on the weekends.
The ship sails at various times over the weekend, including 14:00pm, but it’s the sunset party cruise on Saturday, 30 April, that you really want to book a ticket for. Tickets are currently going for R250 per person.

Say goodbye to April
If you’re keen on spending your weekend meditating on the word “chill” then why not check out Last Sunday Sessions – a monthly gathering that’s brimming with dialogue, market space and live music. It’s also the perfect spot for those looking to support and uplift local entrepreneurs and creatives in Cape Town. Listen to relaxing African beats from the carefully curated musicians on offer for only R80 per person.

Take a hike
If you’re one of the many Capetonians who are obsessed with hiking, then this one is for you! Mont Rochelle is a gorgeous and mountainous nature reserve that offers spectacular views and incredible hiking trails. This little slice of heaven is not for the faint of hearted, but is well worth the effort! The nature reserve is encouraging to those who love the great outdoors to book their ticket and take a hike. Check out all the details here.

Mountains and Wine
If you love wine and a good view then head to Elgin this weekend and enjoy the Elgin Cool Wine Festival. Hosted over two days from 30 April – 1 May, this is a fun event to enjoy with your family and friends as you revel at the valley and indulge in free tastings at the participating wine estates. Spend the day enjoying live music, outdoor activities and exciting entertainment for the whole family before grabbing a bite to eat at the Elgin Railway Market. Tickets are going for R250 for a weekend pass and a free wine tasting glass.
