Neens Kitchen embarked on a journey to the Helderberg Farm on Wednesday morning, October 27, to collect strawberries. The farm not only grows strawberries, but grapes too. One of the things Neens Kitchen always looks out for is quality fruits to make the best artisan preserves.
Neens Kitchen was far from disappointed. From friendly ladies picking strawberries in the fields, to the owner of the farm, Wiempie… the place simply boasts peace and happiness.
The fifth generation of farmers who live and farm in the Boland Winelands have got it just right with no commercial feel on the farm. The farm offers strawberry picking in season, a tea garden, hiking trials, bike trials, functions, trail running and the list goes on.
It’s a real gem of a place that I was delighted to discover and Neens Kitchen says she will be going back, not only for the strawberries, but also for the most delicious cakes that the farmer’s wife bakes.
“I stood in the tea garden kiosk for a while deciding on which cake to enjoy with my tea, it was such a hard decision. I settled for the moist four layer chocolate cake, on the owners advice, it was served with fresh strawberries and cream, of course,” she says.
“I have travelled extensively and this is the best chocolate cake in the world. At the cost of R35 a slice, just incredibly well priced as well.
“These gems of places create a magical escape from suburbia, thank you Helderberg Farm for a glorious morning on your farm. I have 20 kgs of juicy strawberries in my kitchen now, I best get going with the cooking”, she adds.
