Dr Bryony May, who started the social initiative Out the Box, said that Park Buddies forms part of the organisation’s street school in Macassar called Little Smarties, which has a vision to empower youth to be responsible for their environment and to enjoy the spirit and impact of teamwork.
Park Buddies meets every Saturday to clean up and maintain their community land and parks.
Out the Box adds an element of reward and fun to the project by allowing the young volunteers to earn badges for their attendance and effort. The organisation hopes to garner enough support to be able to afford t-shirts and educational field trips for the long-standing volunteers who show continuous dedication to cleaning up the environment and uplifting their communities.
The community of Cape Town can show support for this great cause by donating old garden gloves to the little beings who make up the Park Buddies team.
