The initiative kicked off on 4 September with a special ‘kitchen takeover’ event. For this launch, Hudsons invited a celebrated chef to helm the kitchen for one night, providing guests with the rare opportunity to meet the culinary maestro and sample their exclusive burger creation.
For September, the spotlight was on Liam Tomlin of Chef’s Warehouse, who crafted a Mexican-themed smashburger.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the staff and shown to a cosy spot next to the restaurant’s fireplace, perfect for a chilly Cape Town evening. The atmosphere was lively, with diners eagerly anticipating Tomlin’s unique burger creation.
Our order was served within an impressive five minutes, a testament to the restaurant’s efficient service. The smashburger, perfectly portioned, offered an explosion of flavours that was truly exceptional. Tomlin’s culinary skills were evident in every bite.
The accompanying fries, enhanced with a delectable smoked guacamole sauce and sweet potatoe mole, and our drink of choice—’The Vaccine’ cocktail featuring Absolut Vodka, blueberry purée, and a splash of bubbly—perfectly complemented the meal.
Service throughout the evening was outstanding, with cheerful waitstaff ensuring a pleasant dining experience.
We had the pleasure of speaking with Liam Tomlin, who shared the inspiration behind his burger.
‘I just wanted to create something that appealed to the mass market, and Mexican cuisine is very popular with everybody,’ he explained.
Tomlin’s primary goal was to support the charity close to his heart, Reach for a Dream.
‘The main aim is to raise money for the charity. It’s an amazing cause; I’ve been involved with them since 2016, and we hold a big gala dinner every year to raise funds,’ he said.
‘This smashburger is priced reasonably so it’s accessible to everyone.’
Reach for a Dream is a charity dedicated to fulfilling the last wishes of terminally ill children. This year, the organisation achieved a milestone by raising the most funds ever in a single year.
The evening was a resounding success, particularly in terms of its charitable impact.
30% of the proceeds from each meal will benefit Reach for a Dream. We eagerly anticipate Hudson’s next top chef and their exclusive burger, which will debut in October.
