This event, attended by 26 passionate seniors from the neighbourhood, was a watershed moment in the garden’s continuous attempts to engage the local community in horticulture activities.
The course began with an instructive presentation on the fundamentals of rose pruning, including vital techniques and the benefits of frequent pruning for healthy, vibrant roses.
Following the presentation, participants were led through practical pruning exercises, allowing them to apply their newly acquired knowledge under the supervision of professional gardeners.

‘The workshop’s success reflects the Mitchells Plain community’s strong character. Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, stated that ‘we are dedicated to supporting programs that enrich our public areas and stimulate community interaction.’
Ward Councillor Ashley Potts, who actively participated in the practical session, was enthusiastic about the proposal.
‘It’s inspiring to see our seniors getting involved in such a hands-on way. Events like this not only beautify our community but also bring people together in meaningful ways,’ said Councillor Potts.

‘I never knew how to care for roses before, but now I’m eager to get some for my garden and put my new skills to use,’ said Marlene January, who was excited to prune roses for the first time.
Another participant, Shariefa Toffar, found the experience particularly inspiring.
‘I wasn’t very confident in my gardening skills before, but I learned so much. I even took some cuttings from the pruned roses, and I’m going to try propagating them for the first time,’ said Ms Toffar.
The Westridge Rose Garden’s tiny rose pruning workshop is only the start of many more community-focused activities to come.
The seniors’ delight and joy demonstrate the good influence such efforts have on the local community.
