The sun is setting a little later and the temperature is doing a little dip, but 19 March was the perfect day filled with endless summer sun and a harvest weekend that proved to be tons of fun.
As someone who calls the Northern Suburbs home, I’ve always gravitated towards the Durbanville Wine Route. While Stellenbosch is the golden child of the Western Cape’s wine world, Durbanville is a gorgeous destination that doesn’t have to show off too much, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido.
Harvest weekend is a tough time for winemakers looking to get the ripened grapes off the vine. 12-Hour shifts and plenty of elbow grease ensure that individuals working in the wine industry party the hardest.
Harvest weekend, which took place between 19 – 20 March, saw a range of wineries across the route breathe a sigh of relief and share it with wine lovers around the city.
However, it’s one little wine-loving oasis that stands out above the rest – literally.
Signal Gun is an incredible wine estate nestled along the hills of Durbanville. Expect endless views of the region below, a vibey atmosphere, amazing service and relaxing space for those looking to chill and sip on award-winning wines.
While they offer a range of incredible reds, whites and roses, it’s their Blanc de Noir that had my tastebuds tingling and my hand signalling to the waiter for another glass.
While the atmosphere and incredible wines ensure that this winery will always have a place in your heart, it’s the reason this little gem is called Signal Gun that will have you coming back for more every first Saturday of the month.
A 300-year-old cannon can be found on the estate, offering patrons a little entertainment when the clock strikes 13:00. If watching a little bit of history doesn’t suit your fancy, then grab a seat and enjoy some live entertainment – available every weekend for those looking to sip and dance it off.
After a few glasses of – responsible – drinking, I took a quick stroll around this sprawling farm. I managed to spot a few elands hiding from the midday sun under the shade of a few trees, which leads me to my next entertainment point.
Signal Gun takes their wine safari experience to another level. Visitors have the option to drive through the vineyards and head to Hoogeberg’s Game Camp where you’ll spot eland, springbuck, zebra, grey Ribbok, ostrich, and plenty of birdlife.
While enjoying a wine safari was not on the agenda, it soon will be as the experience sounds and looks incredible purely judging by the surroundings.
All-in-all, Signal Gun Wines are a must for those visiting or living in the Northern Suburbs. If not for the award-winning wines, do it for the views!
