Between soaring grocery and petrol prices, South Africans have been having a rough go of it lately. But we’re a resilient bunch and there’s nothing we love more than laughing through the pain.
While we admit the dire financial situation many individuals are currently facing is no laughing matter, sometimes it helps to shake your head, have a little fun, and share your wisdom with the rest of South Africa.
And that’s exactly what we’re doing. South Africans decided to hop onto Twitter to share the ways in which they’re planning to save money, and we have to admit, it’s pretty brilliant.
Taking to social media, Gustavo decided to kick things off, sharing a few tips on how to survive:
Leave huns alone, pour enough petrol to get to your destination and back, eat only when you feel dizzy, don’t buy milk or eggs, 3 bananas constitute a meal, pretend to be a homebody, pretend to buy a car at a dealership if u want coffee.
Follow me for more financial advice.

But the tips don’t end there. Gustavo hit us with a bonus tip which shouldn’t be overlooked: “keep your geyser off, simply shower at gym and charge all your electronic devices there including your electric scooter.”
If that isn’t some solid financial advice, then we don’t know what is! The rest of the Twitterverse decided to join in on the action.
User Christy’s World offered another nugget of wisdom for those looking to save: “If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down. Save on water too. As a matter of fact, switch off your fridge too and use the one at work, but label it “baby milk.””
Ah! What would we do without that quintessential South African humour?
