In July this year we wrote about loved local, Tannie Poppie, who warms the hearts of people everywhere with her kind smile and her delicious roosterkoek. Poppie was invited to go to Italy but could not afford the flight. A BackABuddy page was set up to help her reach her dreams, and we’re happy to say that she will soon be on her way.

Poppie van As, owner of Poppie Se Roosterkoek, was invited to share her delicious roosterkoek and Western Cape culture with locals in Italy. The community was asked to rally around her and help her make it to the Mediterranean nation.

Six years ago Poppie became friends with Capetonian cycling enthusiast Stan Engelbrecht when he asked her to prepare some of her famous roosterkoek for a cycling event he was involved in. Poppie’s friendly personality and hot roosterkoek warmed the hearts of cyclists during the event, and a lifelong friendship was formed.

“Over the years she has made ‘roosterkoek’ at all my races, and she has become part of the family, so to speak,” says Engelbrecht.

It was Engelbracht that set up the BackABuddy account for her earlier this year to help her reach her dreams and he happily updated the page this month with wonderful news.

“We would like to thank you on behalf of Poppie for the overwhelming support that has been shown to her trip, but more importantly for the interest that you have all had in wanting to see this amazing woman’s story being told. You have all made it possible for us to reach our target,” says Engelbrecht on the page.

Since the page was established Poppie has become somewhat of a local celebrity and her name is known by Capetonians everywhere.

If you’re a Tannie Poppie fan, you can even win a roosterkoek experience with Poppie herself.

Thanks to locals and caring supporters over R100 000 has successfully been raised to support Poppie in her upcoming adventure. Engelbrecht also shared some exciting news that Poppie will soon star in a documentary.

“A little while ago myself and Donnet started working on a documentary about Poppie. The story will be exploring her personal history, her life today and of course her trip to Italy and how it will shape her life. With Poppie’s blessing, a 50% share of all potential profits resulting from the documentary will go to her. We are proud to be able to tell her story, and of course the more donations we receive the better we are able to make the final product,” Engelbrecht added.

As Tannie Poppie prepares to set out on her epic journey departing on September 25, 2019, we can’t help but look forward to seeing the documentary soon and hearing all about Poppie’s adventures.

Ciao Poppie, we’ll see you soon.

You can still donate to Tannie Poppie until September 25 on her BackABuddy page here.
