If you’re looking to hop aboard the vegan express or want to enjoy the kind of meal whereby if you didn’t know any better, you’d never be able to tell it was all deliciously plant-based, I’ve got a recommendation for a little cafe that will gladly be your go-to.
On the buzzing corner of Commercial and Plein street in Cape Town lies the new spot on the vegan block – Infinite Café.
The entire space is designed as the calm kids kind of playground. Sprouting with plants, soft pastel hues, a gorgeous artmural and of course the thrill of the most colourful plant-blased foods coming in and out of the kitchen (quite literally, the burgers range from canary yellow to charcoal black depending on their plant-based make-up) it’s an aesthetic paradise.
There’s even a sweet spot dubbed ‘The Poet’s Corner’ where a poem by Kahlil Gibran, writer of The Prophet emulates Infinite’s ethos – being in our own space together, helping our greater earth in our own ways.
Be prepared for a foodie journey
Now beyond eating up the poetry, my tastebuds were fondly blessed by Infinite’s dashing menu, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
I fall into the category of people who have often looked at vegans as the unsung heroes of the eco-friendly world but never quite found the right meal to encourage me to go full force. I’m happy to write that I think I may have found just exactly the push I needed thanks to Infinite.
My burger came as a bursting yellow, thanks to the turmeric-infused bun, with a Beyond Burger Patty topped with fresh avocado salsa and sweet potato fries. “It tastes better than a normal burger though?” I had thought, inspecting the meal dubbed The Aztec, and wondering what wizardry Infinite had utilised in creating something that not only tasted just like an actual burger patty, but far better.
A friend had ordered a handsome charcoal bun burger topped with tzatziki, and couldn’t stop going on about how good it was. No doubt Instagram foodies will love the dark aesthetic, and delicious taste of the Pantheon burger.
Their cappuccinos had me swirling in delight, and I could’ve ordered a boatload.
It’s not all about the burgers though, and I’m happy to give a run-down for all the different kinds of foodies.
For the light snacker, a must menu-delight is definitely the falafel bowl. The salad lover will certainly enjoy a quinoa and pesto salad and the curry lover absolutely has to dive into the tikka ‘vegicken’ bunny chow.
There’s even a kids corner for the little foodies with a Beyond brat sausage (a kiddies vegan hotdog).
Oh, and there’s dessert too – and her name is avocado choc pie. Don’t be afraid be wonderfully curious.
And for a bonus, they’re currently running a special on some of their breakfast and lunch favourites! Slow-cooked smokey shakshuka, topped with grated plant-based cheese and vegan Italian sausage and JUST egg anyone? It comes with a delightful coffee for only R140.
The wizards behind it all
The food is almost as groovy as the people behind it. Falling part of Infinite Foods, the cafe is all about endless creativity. Because they have such a wide repertoire of brands, from JUST Egg to Happy Culture Kombucha, their options will always stay healthy and fun.
The hands behind your meals, namely the actual wizards are also rising stars in the Cape Town culinary scene. Sotshonoda is the chef at the helm alongside Judith Africa and the duo have both been a part of some of Cape Town’s best-known restaurants, including Jason’s Bakery, Vixxi Social Club and 4and20.
