Living in the inner City of Cape Town often feels like living in an interactive art museum. The people are characters (as most artists are) buildings are often dressed in creativity, and street art imaginings exist all around you. Even if you take a mere meander through town in your car, your window gazing will be filled with thrills thanks to the murals and creative spotting. Parts of the city are like a big playground for the art lover, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
So what do we do with all this art? We celebrate it of course. The 6th edition of the International Public Art Festival is here, and they’re going even bigger this year by adding multistory massive public murals to the skyline of the Cape Town CBD. This adds to the 133 previously painted murals.
The festival is a showcasing of the very best talent within the street-art scene, both locally and internationally.

You can watch the massive murals being created, interact with the street artists, journey along a street art tour and get to hear the extraordinary stories behind the pieces. There’s also an evening programme on the cards where you can explore the creative nightlife of Cape Town.
This year’s theme,’Humanity’ is in connection with Baz-Art. Especially when we consider the passing of ‘The Greatest Capetonian’, Archbishop Desmond Tutu who was a legendary human rights activist, and the past two years where we were forced to reevaluate our societal concepts of what humanity means today thanks to the pandemic, the theme couldn’t be more fitting for the times.
Gather one and all for one of the highlights of the year. Bonus? The festival is free to the public (par street art tours).
Details:
- When: Running until February 27
- Where: The main activities of the festival will take place in the bustling vicinity of Harrington Street
