There are few places that manage to emulate the feeling of home-cooked goodness in a picturesque setting fit for your most critical family member and hungriest little tot, but Deep South Eatery manages to captivate all of the aforementioned – and better.
Just a tender drive out of the city in Simon’s Town lies what was once simply the beloved Glencairn Hotel, which now exists as a culinary adventure that feels like your own kitchen conjured up its wonders. In fact, Deep South Eatery is so dedicated to making their food experience their guests’ own, that they even have an incredible interactive sushi class wherein you’ll be left wondering why you never dedicated your life to the art of sushi making sooner.
Under the brilliant guidance of Deep South’s sushi master, guests will be guided in the art of the Japanese culinary cherry.
From the intricate designs of the mighty fashion sandwich to the twists of salmon to be sculptured into roses, you will enjoy the thrill of art in sushi form, in one of the most gorgeous settings between land and sea in the Western Cape.
The Glencairn Hotel has after all been around since the early 1900s and has seen numerous refurbishings. However, from the 50s to the present, the setting has always been the pearl of Simon’s Town.
Warning: there will be soy-sauce infused laughter, sticky rise that might fight your untrained fingers, and brilliant stories to be heard from partner Melissa and your sushi guide through it all. Oh, and spoils of wine is delightful overflow.
If you’ve charted the waters of a sushi-making feast, you might be delighted to know that sushi is far from the only type of food you can indulge in at Deep South.
Italian lovers will relish knowing that there are pizza ovens ready at the flame to serve up traditional Italian slices. Meat lovers can rub their knives and forks together in wonderful anticipation as they enjoy the Hickory Shack – the section dedicated to an array of mouth-watering meat delicacies ready to be prepared just the way you like them.
There’s wine, gorgeous scenery, interior design that will make your Pinterest jealous, and overall energy of infectious joy and warmth.
The barstaurant that is the eatery and all her culinary flowers are the labour of love from Melissa and Ryno Du Rand, and as they note it is a piece of magical family space.
“Together with our partners and friends, the Goosen’s (Lisa & Warwick Goosen) we look forward to growing into a familiar name for your family when thinking where to celebrate your special occasions, creating memories at Barstaurant.”
