After a scorcher of a week, Capetonians will be happy to hear that this weekend will bring not only cooler weather and rain in the region, but thunder and lightning as well.

The first rains will fall on Saturday morning and some areas of the Western Cape will experience nearly 20mm of rain.

From just after 5am, the northern parts of the Western Cape will receive substantial downpours and thunderstorms are likely to make their way to Touwsrivier.

The cold front will head in a south-easterly direction, and the Cape Winelands, Overberg, Overstrand, and Karoo regions will all enjoy a downpour.

The current weather patterns, however, are predicted to cause rain to fall across the Western Cape on Saturday, but miss Cape Town and its surrounding suburbs. This may, however, change as weather patterns continue to evolve over the next two days.

A second cold front will sweep in from the south coast on Sunday, with more rain hitting the Cape from 2am onwards.

By 11pm, any lingering spots of rain will disappear.

The weekend’s impressive rainfall will be most generous in regions in the middle of the Garden Route. Cape Town itself is likely to get just 2-3mm of rain.
