Gone are the days of rising and resting with the rhythms of the sun. As a human race, we’re pushing ourselves beyond nature’s boundaries, and at some point or another, nature always snaps back, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Robyn Simpson.
Just a fabulous road trip away from Cape Town lies Treedom Villas and Vardos. The perfect getaway for one-on-one time with Mother Nature and the people you love most.
Built amongst nature in a private forest, explorers will find the brainchild of wild hearts, Marc and Debbie Nortjé: the most exquisite Vardos.
Vardo derives from the Iranian word vurdon, for cart or wagon. Traveller vardo living is a trip back in time to a place where highly skilled craftsmen were commissioned by wealthy Romani (‘Gypsy’) or Carnival owners to create magnificent liveable and moveable works of art.
Treedom has two kitted-out caravans: The Gypsy and The Owl.
Each vardo has cast-iron cookware, a gas-top stove, a queen-sized bed dressed with cotton sheets, a shower and a loo.
Outside each vardo is an epic outdoor shed that’s fully equipped with heaters for colder evenings, a lounge, and a dining setup.
Step outside to enjoy the brick braai in your private, enclosed camp. There’s a cozy, double day bed to enjoy, too.
The Gypsy vardo features a stunning moon swing that light’s up at night and The Owl has a seriously cool barrel bath set up under a tree.
At every point, there’s art. There’s magic and fairy dust seeped into every brushstroke and building block. You’ll find something new to gawk at every time you enter your camp’s gate.
“When designing the vardos we wanted to collaborate with those who could really see our vision. We wanted quirky people who live and breathe art, we wanted authenticity so we called Afrikaburn,” says Debbie.
Also on the property to enjoy is a hand-built (by Marc) sauna and heart-shaped dipping pool. You have to try Debbi’s ‘hot and cold’ challenge and bounce between the warmth of the sauna to the ice of the pool (the water is refreshingly freezing).
Treedom travellers can also experience a romantic love tunnel dinner: a private feast in the forest set up under a handwoven tunnel.
If you’re keen on stepping out, the beach is just down the road and the Wild Oats Community Farmers Market is a must-visit if you’re in Wilderness over the weekend.
Treedom Villas and Vardos has a soul of its own. A life-changing experience that only those lucky enough to visit will be able to fully understand. For seasonal rates and bookings, visit www.treedomvillas.co.za.
Until then, here is a little video of the magic that awaits.
