South African Weather Services has issued a warning of gale force winds for the Western Cape today Monday, June 10 which have a strong chance of causing runaway veld fires in certain areas of the province.

A cold front is expected to reach the Cape this evening and cause rough seas.

Forecaster Lebogang Makgati says there will be no significant rainfall, but cold weather can be expected. He says the Breede River Valley, Central Karoo and Southern Cape areas are at high risk of veld fires due to the windy conditions.

“Winds are expected to be reaching 60 to 80km per hour. We also have a warning out for possible veld fire conditions. There’s dry and warm conditions ahead of this cold front. This may make conditions favourable for the development of runaway fires. We urge the public to take the necessary precautions,” Makgati says.
