Motorists using the R321 yesterday morning became caught in a rare sandstorm that swept across a stretch of road connecting Grabouw and Villiersdorp.

Conditions became severe with visibility being close to zero as drivers attempted to continue along the road.

A man in a fluorescent jacket tried to warn motorists of the adverse weather conditions but to no avail as the wind and waves of dust forced him to leave the roadway.

Pedestrians crossing the road were nearly swept off their feet by the strong wind.

The unusual weather was caused by gale force winds which are sweeping the province as a cold front prepares to make landfall this evening.

The South African Weather Services have issued a warning regarding the weather, which has the potential to cause and spread veld fires in areas such as the Breede River Valley, Central Karoo, and Southern Cape.

Locals are advised to take care while travelling today.
