Ah, the Espresso Martini – the drink that solidifies a caffeinated happy hour with a fine bittersweet balance.
Espresso Martinis as a whole are not impossible to find. However, finding the finest of the lot marks a separate challenge altogether.
Here in the Mother City, there are two sub-cultures that prevail unapologetically – our love of coffee, and our love of a good cocktail. As winter sets in, coffee sales step up, and cocktail lovers might need something a little warmer, whilst still strumming the same buzz.
And so, in a quest to share the best of our beloved worlds, here are some of the finest spots to grab an Espresso Martini in Cape Town:
1.The Dark Horse bar
Cape Town’s bohemian-meets-rooftop sleek fairytale bar, The Dark Horse, is a firm Kloof Street favourite amongst locals. Beyond the mystic layout of the spot, sparkling rooftop views and constant buzz of life, one thing will have me coming back to the Horse even if all the eye-candy were stripped away – it’s their Espresso Martini, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt. It kicks you right where caffeine does but soothes you with a gentle sweetness along the journey. You’d be forgiven for going over your “I’ll just have one” promises with this rendition!
Where: 145 Kloof St, Gardens
2. The House of Machines
Edgy, alternative and one of the coolest hang out spots in town, quaintly set on Shortmarket St. The House’s rendition of the Espresso Martini is aptly described as “morning & night’s illegitimate love child,” and goes by the spicy name Mezcal Espresso Martini. Mezcal has one of the most distinct flavours giving hints of a smoky taste.
Where: 84 Shortmarket St, Cape Town City Centre
3. Bombay Bicycle Club
If the divinely whacky and curious spot oozing energy from the top of the hill already intrigued you from afar, then a sure reason to set foot into the wonderful world that is the Bombay Bicycle Club must come from its version of an Espresso Martini. Dubbed a “Salted Karamel Espresso Martini” BBC’s rendition of the famous drink draws on nites of espresso, salted Karamel Vodka, café liqueur and a dash of cream. What more could a sweet tooth, Espresso Martini lover want?
Where:158 Kloof St, Gardens
4. Fable
It’s no fable that Fable is one of the most iconic cocktail spots in town. Special is an understatement when it comes to this spot, known for its drinkable creativity and vibrance. While there are dime a dozen signature drinks to explore upon a Fable excursion (fair warning, you are paying for the uniqueness), the Espresso Martini is a fabulous classic favourite for those who like to keep things somewhat traditional, with a little punch. Combining vodka, Kahlua and its house cold brew, Fable’s rendition is a delicate dance on the tastebuds that you won’t want to finish.
