World Sight Day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, is a global event to draw attention to blindness and vision impairment. It also happens to fall during World Mental Health Awareness Month. The theme is “Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority”.
Being able to see clearly is an absolute priority – from performing well at school to being able to play and interact with others. Imagine trying to play a game of rugga with fuzzy vision…
Impaired vision is often associated with golden oldies. It’s easy to forget children who might suffer. For example, children expressing ongoing headaches or who have trouble concentrating might need something as simple as a pair of glasses to make life a whole lot easier (and more fun).
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and Ryan O’Connor, with the help of Oakley and OneSight, teamed up to raise awareness and help a few children in need get an all-important eye test.
The initiative speaks to the great work being done by The Kolisi Foundation: founded by Siya and Rachel Kolisi with a vision to change narratives of inequality in South Africa. “By working alongside others, adding our story to the stories of communities and individuals who are changing the world. By ‘remembering the one, one by one’ we will impact the nation.”
