This week, the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation celebrated the much-anticipated premiere of its latest documentary film, ‘Wild Waterfront’, at Cape Town’s historic Labia Theatre, Cape {town} Etc reports.
Directed by the award-winning team of Marguerite Venter and Jerome Stationway, the film shines a spotlight on the essential work performed by the Marine Wildlife Management team at the iconic V&A Waterfront, a vibrant urban harbour that draws approximately 26 million visitors annually.
Wild Waterfront offers an intimate glimpse into the daily struggles and triumphs of a dedicated team striving to protect Cape Town’s diverse marine wildlife amidst the challenges of urbanisation.
With funding and support from Film Cape Town, the documentary has come to life, revealing the nearly hidden ecological wonders that exist close to one of South Africa’s busiest tourist hubs.

The documentary follows the Marine Wildlife Management team’s resolute commitment to safeguarding marine species such as Cape fur seals and a plethora of other creatures that inhabit the waterfront area.
While it serves as a bustling venue for shopping and dining, the V&A Waterfront is also a vital habitat for a rich variety of marine wildlife including sunfish, seabirds, and even the occasional visiting whale or dolphin.
The Marine Wildlife Management Programme, operated by the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation in partnership with the V&A Waterfront, plays a crucial role in monitoring wildlife and facilitating human-animal conflict resolution.
The team’s efforts often focus on rescuing seals caught in plastic waste and freeing marine birds from hazardous entanglements. On occasion, they are called upon to assist sunfish or seals stranded in the dry docks, highlighting the team’s role as guardians of urban marine life.
