In a display of extraordinary endurance and commitment, four South African adventurers, known as Team Ocean Mavericks, are currently rowing 4,800 km across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the World’s Toughest Row.
The race began on 14 December 2025, challenging crews to row unsupported from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua’s welcoming shores.
This competition is renowned not only for its physical demands but also for its mental fortitude. The Ocean Mavericks are facing grueling conditions towering swells, tropical storms, and relentless sun exposure all while battling extreme sleep deprivation.
With no rescue boats or supply drops available, the team must navigate their journey, repair their vessel, desalinate drinking water, and meticulously ration food, rowing continuously in punishing two-hour shifts that can stretch on for 30 to 50 days.
Despite a challenging onset marked by seasickness, the resilience of Martin Hall, JP Briner, Angelo Wilkie-Page, and Matt Botha has shone through.
Recently, the team celebrated a significant milestone by completing their first 500 nautical miles. In a touching moment that uplifted everyone’s spirits, they opened letters from loved ones back home, a reminder of their purpose and support. They even managed to catch a dorado, creating a temporary feast of fresh sushi amidst the vast ocean.
As of now, the Ocean Mavericks have passed the halfway mark, reducing their journey to less than 900 nautical miles left to cover.
They are not just competing; they have also recorded a personal best, covering 88 nautical miles in just 24 hours, placing them in contention with professional crews. Presently, they stand proud in third position overall.
Beyond the thrill of the race, the Ocean Mavericks are rowing for a cause with profound significance. They aim to raise funds for the Pondoland Conservation Trust (PCT), a non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving the Wild Coast’s unique biodiversity while also uplifting local communities.

The fundraising initiative has garnered momentum, thanks in part to the This Day Foundation, which has pledged to match all donations up to R1 million. T
his means that contributions made before the year’s end will have double the impact. To date, the team has successfully raised R1.2 million, reaching 67% of their target, and showing that the spirit of giving is as strong as their desire to conquer the waves.
The Ocean Mavericks have the backing of several organisations, including DITH as their Gold Sponsor, and Shesha as a Silver Sponsor, alongside Bronze Sponsors Investec and Tyremart.
With each stroke of the oars, Team Ocean Mavericks not only represents South Africa but also embodies the virtues of endurance, purpose, and teamwork. They are proving that when united by a cause, extraordinary feats can be achieved, even against the backdrop of the vast, unpredictable ocean.
