Police operations across several Cape Flats communities over the weekend led to the arrest of a teenage suspect, the recovery of two firearms and the discovery of a hijacked vehicle, as officers continued efforts to disrupt criminal activity in identified hotspots.
As reported in a South African Police Service update, which was published on Tuesday, 7 July, officers carried out separate operations in Mitchells Plain, Kensington and Delft, with each incident now forming part of ongoing investigations.
The first breakthrough came in Mitchells Plain, where officers arrested a 16-year-old boy on Sunday, 6 July.
Police said the teenager is expected to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrate’s Court after being charged with robbery, pointing a firearm and possession of a prohibited firearm.
In an unrelated operation later that day, members of the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit recovered a 9mm pistol and 30 rounds of ammunition in Ventura Street, Factreton.
Police have since opened an enquiry docket as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the firearm’s discovery.
Meanwhile, officers in Delft recovered a white Nissan Almera that had earlier been reported hijacked by its owner.
The vehicle was found in Darfur Street before being processed as evidence, while detectives opened a hijacking case for further investigation.
Weekend policing operations that recover illegal firearms and stolen vehicles often form part of broader crime-combatting efforts across the Cape Flats, where police continue to target gang-related violence, armed robberies and vehicle crime.
Investigations into all three incidents are continuing.
