A targeted police operation in Ravensmead led to the arrest of a 33-year-old alleged gang leader and the seizure of a cache of illegal firearms and ammunition, Cape {town}Etc reports.
The arrest forms part of Operation Lockdown III, a national intervention focused on dismantling networks linked to drug trafficking, extortion and violent crime, particularly across the Cape Flats.
According to Cape Town police, officers stepped in after acting on intelligence that pointed towards a person suspected of managing access to a stash of weapons.
Police teams followed up on the information and tracked the suspect to a residence in Ravensmead. The man then allegedly directed officers to a concealed storage spot near a block of flats, where a collection of firearms and ammunition had been hidden.
The seizure included an R5 rifle, a shotgun and three pistols, along with more than 160 rounds of ammunition and multiple magazines.
Authorities also noted that four of the five firearms had their serial numbers removed, and investigators are now preparing to run ballistic tests on the weapons.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Parow Magistrates’ Court soon.
