Epping residents woke to fresh anger after a man arrested in October 2023 pleaded guilty to drug charges and received an R8000 fine suspended for five years, Cape Town safety committee member JP Smith wrote on Facebook, reports Cape {town} Etc.
Police seized nine bags of tik, 31 units of heroin, 19 mandrax tablets and about R1 000 in cash, the post says.
‘Was justice served?’ Smith asked, adding that ”if no one ‘is coming to help’ our communities, then we have to help ourselves,” a line that summed up residents’ frustration online. One Facebook commenter wrote:
‘He is laughing at the justice system,’ reflecting anger among neighbours.
Police continue to recover large drug consignments across the city, with recent operations seizing thousands of mandrax tablets in Grassy Park, underlining persistent supply routes into informal settlements.
According to Government, legal guidance shows magistrates exercise wide discretion and may suspend fines or sentences where mitigating factors apply, while mandatory minimums and sentencing frameworks inform decisions on a case-by-case basis.
Community said they want faster docket finalisation, clearer prosecutorial explanations and more visible disruption of supply chains so families can feel safer.
