Police in Philippi have opened an inquest following the death of a man who succumbed to injuries sustained during a brutal attack in Hanover Park earlier this week.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday in Aloe Street, has sparked outrage after a disturbing video began circulating on social media. The footage shows the victim being violently assaulted by a group of individuals, who are seen pelting him with stones and large rocks, and striking him with what appears to be a plastic pipe.

According to authorities, the man later died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the attack. The motive behind the assault remains unclear at this stage.
Spokespersons from the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened. No arrests have yet been made, and investigations are ongoing.
The shocking nature of the attack has raised concerns about ongoing violence in parts of the Cape Flats, with residents and social media users calling for swift justice and increased policing in the area.
Community members have also expressed fear and frustration, highlighting the frequency of violent incidents and the circulation of graphic content online, which continues to traumatise viewers.
Authorities have urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
As the investigation continues, police have reiterated their commitment to bringing those responsible to justice.
