A teenager arrested for the rape, murder and robbery of a respected Little Karoo farmer has been sentenced to an effective 25 years behind bars, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The Western Cape High Court handed down the sentence this week after the 17-year-old entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State over the killing of 79-year-old Valerie Enzer.
Enzer, who lived alone on Doring Kloof Farm near Van Wyksdorp, was killed in July 2025 in an attack that sent shockwaves through the region. The well-known farmer‘s death quickly became a national talking point, highlighting concerns around the vulnerability of elderly residents living in remote rural areas.
Alarm bells were first raised when neighbours, accustomed to regular communication with Enzer, could not reach her. A farm worker later discovered her body at her home, confirming fears that something had gone terribly wrong. During court proceedings, it emerged that the teenager had specifically targeted Enzer because he knew she lived alone on the farm.
According to admissions made as part of the plea agreement, the accused entered the property, raped the elderly farmer and later killed her. The court heard that he then stole several belongings, including electronic devices and personal items, before using her bank card and abandoning some of the stolen property.
Reportedly, the High Court imposed separate sentences of 20 years for rape, 25 years for murder and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances. However, the sentences for rape and robbery will run concurrently with the murder sentence, resulting in an effective prison term of 25 years.
The teenager was also declared unfit to possess a firearm in future.
Evidence presented during sentencing reportedly painted a troubling picture of previous antisocial behaviour, while prosecutors emphasised the extreme vulnerability of the victim and the calculated nature of the attack. The court ultimately concluded that a lengthy custodial sentence was necessary given the gravity of the crimes committed.
The case has reignited conversations around safety in farming communities, particularly for elderly residents who live alone in isolated areas. Across South Africa’s rural regions, attacks on farmers and farm dwellers often spark wider debates about security, emergency response times and the unique risks faced by people living far from urban centres.
For many in Van Wyksdorp and the surrounding Little Karoo, the sentencing marks the end of a painful legal process. Yet the memory of Enzer’s death continues to resonate in a community still grappling with the loss of a neighbour described by many as a familiar and valued presence.
National Prosecuting Authority representatives welcomed the sentence, saying it reflects the seriousness of the crimes and demonstrates the justice system’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable for acts of violence against vulnerable victims.
