Three men were gunned down inside a home in Groendal, Franschhoek, Cape {town} Etc reports. This incident took place this morning, 17 May, leaving residents stunned and police scrambling to track down the killers. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that all five victims are believed to be between the ages of 30 and 35.
The shooting took place in Jakaranda Street shortly before 10am, when two armed suspects allegedly forced their way into a house and opened fire on the people inside. By the time emergency responders arrived, three men had already died at the scene. A woman and another man survived the attack but suffered injuries during the hail of bullets.
SAPS confirmed that forensic teams remained at the property collecting evidence while officers guarded the area. Residents watched from behind police tape as detectives moved in and out of the scene.
The incident sent shockwaves through the small Cape Winelands town, better known for its wine estates and tourism than violent crime. On social media, many locals expressed disbelief over the brazenness of the attack, particularly because it happened in broad daylight in a residential area.
Some residents reported hearing several rapid gunshots echo through the neighbourhood moments before police and ambulances arrived.
SAPS have also confirmed that murder and attempted murder cases have been opened following the shooting. The investigation has now been handed over to detectives attached to the Provincial Serious Violent Crimes unit, who are leading the hunt for the gunmen.
Authorities have yet to reveal a possible motive, and thus far, no arrests have been made. The shooting has once again placed the spotlight on violent crime in parts of the Western Cape, where communities continue to raise concerns over illegal firearms and recurring gang-related violence.
Police are urging anyone with information about the suspects or the shooting to come forward as the manhunt continues.
