The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport hosted the annual Cultural Awards at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.
Cultural awards celebrate arts, language, heritage
The ceremony celebrated people and organisations that support arts, language, heritage, libraries, museums and archives across the province.
Winners took prizes in several categories. Renowned musician Loukmaan Adams famous for his roles in the iconic District Six and Kat received a Ministerial Commendation. Dr Isaac Balie won a Ministerial Legacy award for lifelong contribution to his field.

Also, Thandi Swartbooi, founder of the all-female ensemble Women Unite, was recognised for work to preserve indigenous dance and music and to empower local communities. The awards honoured both established figures and community leaders who keep culture alive.
Head of Department Guy Redman encouraged guests to keep supporting creative work. ‘The sun has risen,’ he said.
Provincial Minister Ricardo Mackenzie said, ‘Art is the mirror and heartbeat of our society.’ The role of culture in building hope, pride and connection.
