On December 11, 2023, Obagbuwa’s academic journey culminated in a celebration of resilience and determination, establishing him as one of the youngest qualified medical doctors in South Africa’s history.
Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, David’s foray into medicine began at the tender age of 15—a leap that would set him on an inspiring path, punctuated by challenges, especially during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
Obagbuwa recounted his admission to SU as ‘a dream come true,’ marking the start of a rigorous academic journey where ambition soared as high as his youthful spirit.
Relocating to South Africa at the age of 11, Obagbuwa faced considerable hurdles. Initially misplaced in Grade 9 at Kharwastan Secondary School in Durban, he demonstrated extraordinary adaptability, blending seamlessly with older classmates while nurturing his ambition to enter SU’s prestigious medical programme.
‘I had to fight for what I wanted, and I was willing to put in the hard work,’ he reflected.
Despite commencing university as the youngest student in each lecture hall, the experience was a mix of exhilaration and intimidation. The covid-19 lockdown, however, introduced an additional layer of complexity and isolation to his first years of study.
‘Online learning during the pandemic was incredibly challenging,’ he shared, but his innovation and determination allowed him to transition back into in-person education smoothly.
‘When we resumed in 2021, my integration into the university community revitalised my experience,’

Throughout the trials of academic life including sleepless nights and the weight of societal expectations—Obagbuwa cultivated a mindset focused on consistency and accountability. ‘I often reminded myself that despite my youth, I had to rise to the occasion,’ he stated.
His tenacity in balancing the rigours of medical school with personal well-being has become a hallmark of his character. ‘Even when it proved hard, simply showing up made a significant difference,’ he emphasised.
Outside the demanding realm of medicine, the young doctor finds joy in the outdoors, hiking, playing football, and attending rugby matches.
He indulges in podcasts that delve into metaphysical concepts, moral philosophy, and medical ethics—subjects that enrich his understanding of his forthcoming role as a medical practitioner.
As he steps into the next chapter of his career, Obagbuwa has secured an internship at Phologong Hospital in Gauteng’s East Rand.
He is enthusiastic about exploring the various avenues for specialisation and is driven by a vision of making a meaningful impact on the South African healthcare landscape.
‘I’ve developed a deep appreciation for all facets of medicine, and I’m also drawn to research. My goal is to be the best doctor I can be for every patient I encounter,’ he shared with ambition twinkling in his eyes.
